City to get sleet then rain

AFTER the frequently freezing New Year holiday, Shanghai is expected to warm up a little on the weekend, with an increased chance of precipitation starting today, forecasters said.

The icy cold should continue early today with a low around minus 2 degrees Celsius downtown - with a low of about minus 4 in the western suburbs. Today's high should rise to 3 degrees, according to the Shanghai Observatory.

Light snow or sleet is expected this afternoon.

Shanghai was like a refrigerator with a fixed temperature yesterday as the difference between high and low was only around 2 degrees - with a low of minus 1.7 degrees and a high at 0.4 degrees. Intermittent snow did not accumulate.

Warmer but more humid weather should arrive tomorrow and stick around for the following four to six days, forecasters said.

The city is expected to become overcast and rainy, with temperatures in the next six days ranging from a low no lower than about 1 degree Celsius to a high up to 8 degrees.

While temperatures rise, it may feel colder than expected because little sunshine and increasing humidity is forecast.
