City to phase out 200,000 dirty vehicles by 2015
TO reduce air pollution and improve its environment, Shanghai will limit and phase out high-polluting auto vehicles starting next month.
Vehicles that do not meet national emission standards will have a yellow label stuck on their windscreen.
There are about 230,000 old and polluting vehicles in Shanghai, about 12 percent of the total on the road, according to the local environment authorities. However they contribute more than half of the city's vehicle emissions, officials said.
The city plans to get 200,000 of them off the road by the end of 2015, and Shanghai residents may see local PM2.5 reading drop by as much as 10 percent.
