City to pick its best attractions

EXPATS and local residents are to have their say on what are Shanghai's top eight attractions reflecting the city's culture and history.

The Shanghai Tourism Administration is compiling the list for visitors to the 2010 World Expo.

There was a similar list drawn up during the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) but most of those sites disappeared as the city developed.

Zhu Yafu, a writer who came up with the idea, said it would be a pity if both Shanghai residents and tourists didn't realize what Shanghai's "must-sees" were.

"I hope the selection results can provide a brief but essential image to newcomers to the city," he said.

The 100 most recommended spots will be announced on September 1. There will then be an online vote to narrow candidates down to 20.

The administration has invited six experts to participate in the selection, including local writers, urban planning professors and tourism professors.

The final Top 8 will be a combination of residents' favorite choices and the experts' opinions.

Shanghai is not the first city in the country to carry out such a selection. Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province selected its Top 10 attractions on the West Lake in 2007.
