City upgrades thunderstorm alert to orange

A thunderstorm is going to affect Shanghai this afternoon and the local weather bureau has issued an orange thunderstorm alert, the second highest of a four-color warning system.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said the thunderstorm is going to strike the city in the next three hours and dump 10 to 20 millimeters of rainwater.

The forecasters issued a yellow alert at 1:30pm but quickly upgraded it to orange and warned people to stay indoors.

The city is still under the influence of a subtropical high with a maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius today, the forecasters said.
