City's pre-pregnancy exam program meets annual goal in 8 months

BY August, Shanghai had offered free pre-pregnancy examinations to 20,605 pairs of couples planning to have children, meeting the goal for the whole year four months ahead of schedule.

Among the couples, 2,678 pairs were found to have high risk factors that could affect safe pregnancies and babies' health and received timely intervention and guidance, officials with the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said today.

Shanghai started a trial of offering exams for couples planning to start families in Jing'an District in 2007 and promoted the program citywide since 2012 as a public health plan.

All couples who are registered residents or those staying in the city for over six months, in line with the nation's family planning policy, are eligible for the program.
