Cleaner subway air with new purifiers

LOCAL commuters will be able to breath a little easier as new air purifiers will be installed in subway stations on several Metro lines.

Tests are being done on two types of air purifiers at Shanghai Railway Station on Line 1 to determine which is better.

Once the purifiers are chosen, they will be installed in stations on Line 7, those in the phase two of Line 8 and Line 9, and also in the northern section of Line 11 by the end of the year.

One of the purifiers being tested is installed in the outlets of air-conditioning ducts. It works as a high-voltage electrostatic cleaner that uses voltage to kill bacteria.

The other cleaner is installed inside air-conditioners and uses negative ions to make small dust particles join together. The weight of the bigger particle forces it to fall to the ground, thus making the air cleaner.
