Closed ramp brings road misery
DRIVERS endured long delays on the Middle Ring Road yesterday when a closed ramp led to a massive tie-up.
The ramp at Tianshan Road W., a major route toward the city's west side, was closed over the weekend because of construction on an elevated road project for the Hongqiao Integrated Transport Hub.
The exit won't reopen until February, traffic authorities said - so drivers will have to find alternate routes for several weeks to come.
Although advance word went out about the shutdown, traffic police still reported jams lasting over 30 minutes in the southbound ring road over the 3,000 meters between Jinshajiang Road and Wuzhong Road because many drivers were "unprepared."
"I forgot about the closing," said a driver who usually takes the Tianshan Road W. exit.
"Suddenly I found my car was stuck among various vehicles scrambling to get off at the next ramp."
Police estimated that more than 2,000 vehicles per hour during morning and evening rushes had to use three other ramps in the area to reach ground-level roads, which also saw congestion.
As alternates to the Tianshan Road W. exit, drivers are advised to get off the ring road at Tongchuan Road, Wanzhen Road and Jinshajiang Road, all north of the closed ramp, officers said.
If drivers do not get off at those exits, they have to take a longer route and get off via the ramp at Wuzhong Road.
A ramp at Xianxia Road, south of the closed ramp, opens only to buses and taxis from 7am to 7pm.
