Computers lament 2 Metro station closures

TWO very crowded Metro stations - one on Quyang Road and one on Wulian Road - have been closed during morning rush hour in hopes of encouraging commuters to use shuttle buses.

The closure that began yesterday caused major confusion and commuter complaints.

Reopening dates have not been announced.

Officials indicated the reason for closure was to allow for upgrading the system, reducing congestion and encouraging people to use convenient shuttle buses.

The Labor Daily newspaper reported today that the Quyang Road Station on Line 8 and the Wulian Road Station on Line 6 were closed yesterday from 7:20am to 8:30am and the closure will continue until further notice.

Commuters found it difficult to get out of the Quyang Station at 8am yesterday, half an hour before the station reopened, as commuters gathered at the only exit - all other entry/exits were roped off and posted signs said, "Passengers Stop."

Outside the station, the scene was chaotic as commuters rushed to shuttle buses running between Quyang Station and People's Square.

Some passengers said Metro operators should have sought commuters' opinions first before closing stations. Some suggested moving the shuttle bus station closer to the only Metro exit for convenience.

The two stations were closed in the morning after scientific research, according to Zhu Limin, assistant to the director at the command center of Shentong Group, the Metro operator.

Zhu was quoted in the news report as saying that 90 percent of the passengers boarding at Quyang Road station are heading for People's Square and shuttle buses cover the distance in around 20 minutes, almost the same as Metro trains.

About 1,600 passengers took shuttle buses during the rush hour at the two stations yesterday.

The Metro operator said the stations will be reopened after the system is upgraded but did not say when.
