Confused in Lujiazui? Here's help

CITY police have a simple suggestion for drivers to keep from getting lost in the Lujiazui area of the Pudong New Area:

Keep your eyes straight ahead and peeled on the traffic signs, instead of looking up at the skyscrapers.

It's a good thing to remember, because the streets can be confusing, said Ding Hongqi, officer of the Pudong traffic police.

"Sometimes you see the building very close, but you just can't drive there," Ding told Shanghai Daily yesterday. "It would be too late for you to turn when you drive into the tunnel to Puxi."

To help make things clearer, police have drawn up a map to illustrate the best routes among the landmarks and skyscrapers.

More than 1,000 leaflets giving traffic directions have been distributed to the white collars who work in the area's office buildings and passersby who got lost and asked for help, police said yesterday.

Ding said they started to distribute the sheets with maps a month ago when two new tunnels, the Xinjian Road Tunnel and the Renmin Road Tunnel, opened.
