Cool, wet weather to stick around for a few days

THE cool temperatures mixed with occasional showers are likely to continue until at least Friday, weathermen said.

The city has had 13 straight days with the mercury below 35 degrees Celsius, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau today.

The city has also avoided a typhoon so far, surprising weathermen. Meteorologists predicted earlier that two or three typhoons would hit the city this year.

"There was no typhoon in the city in July, but that doesn't mean there will not be one in the next two months," the bureau's Li Jinyu said.

Two typhoons are likely to hit China in the coming days.

Tropical storm Morakot will likely be upgraded to a typhoon by the time it hits China later this week. Whether it will influence the city cannot be predicted now, the China Meteorological Administration said. The maximum wind speed near the center of the storm is 65 kilometers per hour. The storm is moving at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour.

The bureau also said Taihu Lake's water level was 3.8 meters yesterday, 0.3 meters higher than the warning level. The lake is upstream of the Huangpu River in Jiangsu Province.
