Cooler weather ahead with more rain

SHANGHAI is cooling down today with the mercury staying below 35 degrees Celsius due to showers yesterday and today, weatherman said.

Today's maximum temperature is 33 degrees and the heat that broiled the city for weeks this month will not return in next few days, said Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The bureau issued a yellow rainstorm alert, the third of a four-level warning system at 12:10pm.

Torrential rains as big as the one yesterday would occur in the next two days as a cold air mass meets and a warm air mass over the region.

Meanwhile, a tropical storm is forming in the Pacific, which is likely to build into a typhoon early next month, said Zhang Ruiyi, a senior meteorologist at the bureau. It was not clear if the typhoon would influence the city.

Zhang said the number of typhoons has decreased this year compared with a normal year. None of the few typhoons had exerted any influence on Shanghai this summer.
