Creative park to emerge near Tongji campus

A bus parking lot near Tongji University will be transformed into a creative park with international design and innovation firms and institutes, Tongji officials said today.

Construction on the creative park will start next month and is expected to finish by 2014. The park in Yangpu District will feature an Italian street, a design museum, and high-end workshops of international design companies.

Wu Zhiqiang, chief planner of the Expo site, reveiled the blueprint of the creative park at the 2010 conference of Cumulus, the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and media.

The "Great Gate of Marco Polo" which now stands at the Italy Pavilion will be moved to the park and become a landmark of the Italian street, where high-end Italian design firms will have studios.

This is the first time for the Cumulus annual conference to be held in China. About 300 participants from 60 top design schools in 28 countries attended the event hosted by Tongji University.
