Crossroad collision leaves 1 dead, 6 injured

A man was killed and six people were injured in a car accident on Chongming Island yesterday morning.
A moped, a taxi and a minibus collided at the intersection of Chenhai Road and Qianshu Road about 8am. The moped driver died on the scene. The other six people were sent to hospital and were in stable condition.
The taxi was moving westward on Chenhai Road while the moped and the minibus were driving northward on Qianshu Road. The taxi first crashed into the moped then hit the minibus due to its high speed. The moped driver, aged about 50, was thrown several meters away and died instantly.
The taxi and the minibus were severely damaged due to heavy impact. The minibus driver was stuck in the seat. Police separated the two vehicles and ambulances rushed the injured to a nearby hospital.
The minibus driver suffered a fractured leg and four minor injuries. His vehilce was carrying seven people to an engagement ceremony. The bride fell out of the minibus and landed luckily on mud, suffering only minor injuries. Her relatives from Anhui Province suffered fractures and bruises.
The moped driver surnamed Gong worked in a community health center in Shuxin Town on Chongming Island. He brother also died in a traffic accident 10 years ago. His parents, in their 80s, were devastated by the news.
The taxi was suspected of running a red light and the cause of the accident was still under investigation, police said.
