Datong Tunnel closes for rail face-lift

DATONG Road Tunnel near Shanghai Railway Station will be closed from this Saturday to next April while the station's north square is being renovated.

Cyclists are recommended either to cross the tracks at Hengfeng Road to the west of Datong Road, or detour to Panjiawan Underpass near Hengfeng Road, and Xizang Road N. underpass at the east side of Datong Road, traffic police said today.

Pedestrians can use the underground walkway connecting Metro Line 1 and Line 3 under the Shanghai Railway Station. Vehicles can detour via Zhenping Road Bridge, Jiangning Road Bridge, Gonghexin Road or the North-south Elevated Road, traffic police said.

Built in 1987, Datong Tunnel is an underpass for pedestrians and bicycles that handles more than 8,000 bikes an hour in rush hours.

The rail station's two squares will be linked by an overpass next year.
