Death toll in truck accidents rises to 13

A CYCLIST died and two others were injured in three separate accidents involving construction trucks over the past two days, despite an intensified police crackdown.

The latest victim lost his life after his bicycle was hit by a construction truck at the intersection of Xintanwa Highway and Zhouzhu Highway, Pudong New Area, about 11:30am yesterday.

He died at the scene, police said.

Just hours earlier, another cyclist was hit by a heavy truck in downtown Xuhui District. He suffered a serious knee fracture.

On Thursday evening, a man suffered brain damage after a collision with a speeding truck in Pudong's Nanhui area.

Yesterday's fatal accident brought to 13 the number of construction truck-related deaths since mid-November.

Earlier this week, the city's traffic police launched a citywide crackdown on heavy vehicles speeding, being overloaded and ignoring traffic lights -- the major reasons for the deadly accidents.

To date, more than 60 trucks have been found to be in breach of traffic regulations.
