Deeper channel opens to ships
THE key waterway-deepening project at the mouth of Yangtze Delta aimed at allowing larger vessels into Shanghai ports opened for a one-year pilot operation yesterday.
The main deepwater navigation channel, 92.2-kilometer-long, has been dredged to a depth of 12.5 meters, up from 7 meters. It is estimated that a cargo ship can carry about 700 more standard containers on each trip using the deeper channel. The channel is vital for the city's booming shipping business as well as the lifeline for inland ports.
