Districts issue red alerts as heavy rain soaks city

HEAVY downpours are drenching the city under the combined influence of the outer bands of Typhoon Goni and a cold front, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said today.
The torrential rain and gusty winds are expected to last through tonight and taper off after Typhoon Goni moves further from the city.
The weather bureau upgraded its yellow storm alert to orange at 7:54am as the intensity of the rain increased.
Jiading and Minhang districts, which saw the heaviest rainfalls, later upgraded their district storm alerts from orange to red, the highest of the three levels.
By 9:30am, Jiading District had recorded rainfall of 129.3 millimeters. A weather station in Minhang District recorded 156.1 millimeters of precipitation, the most of the city's weather stations.
Shanghai's central and western areas will receive between 40 and 60 millimeters of rainfall per hour during the storm, the bureau said.
Some roads were severely jammed during the morning rush hour today because of the rain.
