Downtown hit by power cut

PART of downtown former Luwan District suffered a power failure this afternoon, hitting department stores, shops and offices in the area.

The power failure centered around the Jinjiang Tower on Maoming Road S. and was caused by a break at an underground transformer substation, said the Shanghai Electric Power Co Ltd, the city's power supplier.

The Okura Garden Hotel, Jinjiang Tower and shops along Maoming Road S. and department stores on Huaihai Road M. - including Parkson and Printemps- were all affected by the shutdown that began at 1:15pm.

Customers, store staff and office workers had to be evacuated on Huaihai Road.

Part of the power supply was reconnected by 3pm.

The company said the power failure was caused by a switch being tripped at a 110,000 volt substation in the area due to "an external force," but did not give more details.

The incident was still under investigation last night.

Luwan District was last week merged into the bigger Huangpu District.
