Driver stricken, car hits 6 stores

A car crashed into six roadside stores after the driver suffered a sudden fatal condition yesterday, and the driver died before being pulled out of the car by an ambulance crew, police said.

The accident happened at Ziyuan Road and Beidizhi Road in Huacao Town in Minhang District. Witnesses said the car, an Audi, lost control and a senior vendor on the roadside was hit on the leg but was not seriously hurt.

The car then crashed into garment stores and flower stores. The Ziyuan Road street nameplate and a telegraph pole were also hit.

A garment store owner surnamed Zhu said he had no time to respond when the car suddenly careened toward his store.

"After hitting here, it didn't stop, but still rushed north," he said.

After the car finally stopped when hitting the last store, people found that the driver had lost consciousness, with his head tilting to the shoulder.

"We could see that the driver was in a coma then," said a witness surnamed Tian.

The driver, 58-year-old surnamed Chen, was found to have lost his life signs after the ambulance came.

Police said Chen was likely stricken by an acute disease, such as a heart attack or stroke.
