Driver's family will sell all to compensate crash victims

THE family of the driver who killed four workers and injured another six in an accident early this month decided to sell all its property to pay compensation of at least 1.5 million yuan (US$219,726), according to a local newspaper yesterday.

The government of Hangtou Town in the Pudong New Area, where six of the victims are from, released the information on its official Website.

The government said families of two of the dead victims, Liu Yingxuan from Sichuan Province and Ao Tianyong from Chongqing Municipality, had come to the city and agreed on the initial compensation plan after negotiation.

The driver, surnamed Pan, a 25-year-old student of a graduate school "was yawning, rubbing eyes and doing hair" while driving on the highway, which caused the tragedy directly, said the district prosecutor's office. Pan has been arrested for traffic accident crime.

The compensation was prepaid by the victims' company and is expected to be reimbursed by the Pans.

Pan's parents said they would borrow money from relatives to help gather the needed funds. Pan's boyfriend added that he would sell his apartment and car to help her and would attend the funerals of the victims.

The fatal accident happened about 2pm on February 10. Pan's car crashed into a group of 10 road workers on the Middle Ring Road in the Pudong New Area. Two died instantly, another died on the next day and the fourth victim, surnamed Fu, was pronounced dead on the Chinese New Year's Eve, according to the Renji and Shuguang hospitals.

Two of the injured have left the hospital and four were still in the wards.

Prosecutors said Pan's car first knocked away a worker who was picking up tools in the road company's minibus, which her car hit before crashing into the group of workers who were installing noise barriers on the Middle Ring Road.
