Drunk driver caused fatal collision

A migrant worker, despite having no driving license, drove a minivan while drunk and ran into two people on a motorcycle in the Pudong New Area, killing one and severely injuring the other, local police said yesterday.

Yang Xiaowei, from Jiangsu Province, who worked at a construction site, has been held responsible for the accident and will be prosecuted later. Two of Yang's associates, who helped him to avoid capture and destroy evidence, will also face criminal charges.

Feng Jinsong and Gong Xiangxiao were on their way home after work about 9:40pm on September 17 when Yang ran into them.

"When I came to, I saw a person getting out of the minivan about 10 meters away and then running off," said Feng.

Yang fell asleep at the wheel and ran into Feng and Gong. Gong was a 20-year-old Shandong native, who died later at hospital.

Since Yang knew police could recognize him from roadside cameras, he asked his cousin to help by burning the white T-shirt he was wearing when the accident happened.

Du Meng, their boss and the minivan owner, on learning of the accident, relocated Yang to another construction site to evade the police investigation, police said.

Both Du and Yang's cousin face charges of concealing a suspect, police said.
