Emergency action in Shanghai
SHANGHAI activated emergency measures early yesterday to tackle the air pollution shrouding the city.
Kindergartens, primary and secondary schools were told to cancel outdoor activities and construction sites ordered to stop work. Children, elderly people and those suffering from heart and lung diseases, and other vulnerable people, were advised to stay indoors.
A yellow alert, the third level in a four-tier warning system, was issued at 6am.
City weather forecasters said this month’s frequent haze was the result of a number of factors, including low wind speeds and high relative humidity, making it hard for the haze to disperse.
The weather bureau said the haze is expected to last until tomorrow afternoon.
Meanwhile, the city’s environment protection authority said it was working on a new emergency plan with lower thresholds, wider coverage and stricter measures.
Vehicle restrictions are under consideration, an official said.
The draft will be proposed to experts and the city government for review next month.
Responding to parents’ requests, the city’s education commission said it was studying a proposal to set up air purifiers in schools.
However, it said setting up purifiers improperly could result in outbreaks of infectious respiratory diseases. It also said that, so far, there were no air purifying facilities suitable for schools.
