Expo bus in killer crash

ONE passenger was killed and 35 injured when a shuttle bus leaving the World Expo site collided with a heavy truck late on Monday night on a highway in the Pudong New Area, Shanghai police said yesterday.

The dead passenger, 45-year-old carpenter Zheng Gao, had just visited the Expo with his wife and son and was said to be sitting in the front of the bus. Zheng's wife and son, 21, were still in hospital last night, said his neighbors.

Two of the injured, a man and a woman, both unidentified, were in critical condition last night, according to doctors at a hospital in Pudong's Nanhui area. A hospital official surnamed Zhang said the woman suffered a severe cranial trauma and the man's left leg was amputated.

At least 50 passengers were on the bus when the accident occurred and were sent to the hospital on Monday night, Zhang told Shanghai Daily yesterday. Fifteen have left the hospital.

The responsibility for the accident was unclear but the truck driver was taken by the police. The case was still under investigation last night, according to the police.

The wreck occurred at about 9:30pm on the S32 Shenjiahu Expressway.

Witnesses said the truck was in front, carrying tons of steel tubes, when it suddenly lost control and braked hard, causing the steel tubes to drop. Expo Bus 16, right behind, was hit by the tubes and failed to avoid colliding with the truck, witnesses said.

The impact destroyed the front of the bus and threw some passengers out of the vehicle. Pieces of glass scattered everywhere at the scene, according to witnesses.
