Extended Line 11 allows subway train to run at 120kph
WHEN it goes into service next year, the southern extension of Metro Line 11 can transport passengers at a speed of 120kph, two times faster than ordinary Metro lines. The extension will connect the Longyang Road Station with Lingang New Town on the city's southeast coast.
An 11-meter-diameter boring machine has successfully drilled a major tunnel for the extension, announced Shanghai No. 2 Engineering Co.
To ensure smooth ride on high-speed trains, the subway builders used China's widest tunneling shield to build the tunnel which is twice as wide as other subway tunnels in Shanghai.
"If the tube is narrow, passengers may feel uncomfortable in the ears as their high-speed train compresses the air in the tunnel. A bigger tunnel can solve this problem," said a company official.
