Extra subway trains for holidays

SHANGHAI'S subway operator will increase the number of trains in service for the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays to serve an expected surge in passengers.

Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said yesterday it will put 332 trains in service for the holidays with 36 trains in reserve in case of an accident or emergency.

It will be the first time so many trains have been put into service, Shentong said.

There will likely be more than 7 million passengers per day during the holidays as large crowds are expected at the World Expo and at a series of events including tourism, shopping and fireworks festivals.

Yin Wei, a Shentong officer, said 20 contingency plans have been made for six Metro lines.

Yin said train intervals will be cut during rush hours with the extra trains.

Shentong also reminded passengers that Nanjing Road E. Station will be closed at night for the first two or three days of the National Day holiday due to traffic controls.
