Fire shuts down Metro Line 10

METRO Line 10's operation was stopped late yesterday after a fire broke out in a station as the subway was about to end service for the day. No one was injured, city police said.

The fire was reported at 10:24pm at the Guoquan Road station, said the rail operator, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, when passengers smelled smoke on the platform.

"The subway staff carrying fire extinguishers rushed toward the tail of one train," said one rider, describing the scene on a microblog. More than 10 fire engines rushed to the station, witnesses said.

The fire was extinguished at 10:46pm, Shentong said.

The operator said the fire was triggered by malfunctioning power equipment, according to an initial probe.

The line has suffered three severe breakdowns in the past three weeks. During the previous two incidents, the operation was halted as loose wires were found entering the tunnel, leading to riders' complaints about the new line which opened ahead of the Shanghai World Expo last year.
