First red temperature alert of year with high up to 40 degrees
THIS year's first red high temperature alert was issued at 1:18 pm -- the highest of the three-level color system -- warning of a high up to 40 degrees Celsius today, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Outdoors work was halted due to the extremely high temperature.
The official high temperature in downtown Xujiahui hit 39.1 degrees at 1:27 pm, while the mercury reached up to 40.9 degrees in part of the southwest of the Pudong New Area.
The high in Lingang New City observatory, near the sea, was the lowest in the city, recorded as 33.3 degrees.
