Fog clogs ports and ferry traffic

FOG disrupted water traffic at the mouth of the Yangtze River yesterday and was expected to continue to do so this morning.

Most ferries to the city's three islands - Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha - were canceled. A few ran when the fog cleared from 11am to 2pm yesterday.

Ships wanting to use Wusong Port were only able to move for a few hours yesterday.

The Wusong Port immigration police said several ships rushed to port when the fog cleared from 1:30am to 5:30am yesterday, but there were still 40 cargo ships wanting to use the port.

Official Luo Lijuan said movements were expected to top until early this morning.

Weathermen said the heavy fog was due to the city's high humidity and rapidly rising temperature. The mercury reached 25.2 degrees Celsius yesterday. However, rain should keep the temperature down today.

Sunshine will return tomorrow, with temperatures expected to range from 10 to 24 degrees, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
