Forecast calls for lots of rain and plenty of heat

IT will be hot and wet to start the week, meteorologists said yesterday.

Today there will be heavy rain with a high of 30 degrees Celsius and a low of 25 degrees, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The forecast calls for more rain tomorrow and Wednesday with the temperature ranging between 26 and 34 degrees, the bureau said.

It will get hotter as the week progresses with temperatures rising to 36 degrees.

Thunderstorms are likely later in the week.

Vegetable prices increased 2 to 6 percent last week compared to last month due to the rain and heat, according to agricultural product wholesale markets.

Meanwhile, people have complained that weather forecasts have been very inaccurate this summer, including yesterday when storms were predicted but barely any rain fell downtown. Bureau forecasters explained that rainstorms hit suburban areas such as Baoshan and Jiading districts, and Chongming County. They added that the weather changes often in Shanghai in the summer, thus forecasts may be wrong.
