Forecast calls for no rain to start holiday
THE weather is expected to be nice for the start of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays, forecasters said yesterday.
It should be partly cloudy on Sunday, when this year's Mid-Autumn Festival falls, with the mercury ranging between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
On Monday it will be partly sunny with a high temperature of 26 degrees and a low of 19 degrees.
Today and tomorrow are expected to be cloudy with the mercury ranging between 20 and 26 degrees, meteorologists said.
The mercury will drop slightly on Saturday with a low of 18 degrees and a high of 23 degrees.
Meanwhile, Chinese airlines yesterday announced the best flights on Sunday that passengers can watch the moon, which is at its biggest and brightest phase of the year.
A total of 244 domestic and international flights will take off and land on Sunday at Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao international airports between 8pm and midnight, the best period to watch the moon, according to the Shanghai Airport Authority.
Passengers should sit on the right side of cabins for flights flying north or east, and on the left for those heading south or west.
They also should avoid seats near the wings, officials said.
"The color of the moon will change as planes ascend and the experience will be totally different from that on the ground," a press official with China Eastern Airlines said.
China Eastern has picked out four flights that passengers will have great views of the moon - MU5121/28 (Hongqiao to Beijing), MU5339 (Hongqiao to Guangzhou), MU5393 (Hongqiao to Zhengzhou) and MU5647/8 (Hongqiao to Wuyishan).
Golden Week activities
Meanwhile, the city will present a number of fun activities during the eight-day holiday.
A silk culture festival is underway at Yuyuan Garden in Huangpu District. It shows how silk fabric is made with primitive machines. It will run through the end of the holiday.
Century Park in the Pudong New Area will present fireworks shows on September 30, October 3 and October 6 as part of the Shanghai Tourism Festival.
