Foreigner dies in road accident

CITY police were trying to identify the foreigner who was killed when his scooter was hit by a taxi in downtown yesterday.

Police said they did not find any identification on the man.

The accident happened about 7:30am yesterday at the intersection of Wulumuqi Road and Hengshan Road in Xuhui District when the taxi knocked down the scooter rider.

The foreigner was pronounced dead after emergency staff arrived.

A witness said the scooter had run the red light and was then hit by the taxi. Police said they had questioned the cabbie and were still investigating.

Some drivers said the sections of both roads are banned for motor two-wheelers, like scooters and mopeds.

The accident caused severe congestion on both roads during the morning rush hour.

A man surnamed Duan who lives nearby tied a bunch of flower onto a pole near the scene of the accident.

"Although I didn't know him, I think this is a way of expressing my condolence for a foreigner who died here," Duan said.
