Former official in fatal car crash probe

CITY traffic police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road accident in which a cyclist died on Christmas Eve. The driver of the car involved is the former Party secretary of a state-owned group corporation.

Family and relatives of the victim, Fang Jialin, posted a microblog on Sina.com on Monday afternoon denouncing the driver as irresponsible and insensitive for "not showing up since the accident and never apologizing." This attracted considerable public attention.

Luwan District police said the driver involved in the accident is Fang Chen, 65, the former Party secretary of the New Huangpu Real Estate Co, a giant local real estate and urban planning company. He is now retired.

Police said he did not flee the scene after the accident. They were still investigating the case yesterday to find out where responsibility lay.

The accident happened about 8:32pm on Friday at the intersection of Xujiahui Road and Shunchang Road in Luwan District.

The victim was rushed to Ruijin Hospital, police said. He died on Saturday.

Fang Chen, who is out of town giving speeches, told reporters that he contacted the police immediately after the accident and was waiting for the results of their investigation.

He refused to comment further on the accident yesterday.
