Garden seeking more buses for visitors
CHENSHAN Botanical Garden, one of the city's largest green areas, is planning to make it easier for visitors to enjoy its attractions this autumn.
The garden, near Sheshan Hill in Songjiang District, said that since it opened to the public in April, only about 120,000 people had visited due to the lack of transport.
"Many people are not aware of the existence of our garden," said Li Wei, deputy director of the garden. "When we published ads on television about an event, some people even called the Shanghai Botanical Garden for information."
He said the garden would be applying for more shuttle buses to run between the garden and the nearest Metro station, the Sheshan Station on Line 9. At present, only one bus route, the No. 19, is available to the garden, or visitors could a rent bike at the station and cycle, a trip that would take about half an hour.
"Most of our visitors have their own cars," Li said. "But we are hoping that more people will be able to enjoy the greenery at the garden."
A sightseeing bus center is under construction in Songjiang, Li said, and the center will have buses going directly to the garden.
Officials said the garden would be a riot of color during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holiday. Plants such as ornamental pumpkins and Victoria amazonica will be on display. The ornamental pumpkins are of different colors and different shapes, while near 160 breeds of trees will turn the gardens into a sea of red, yellow and orange. More than 200,000 sunflowers covering 9,000 square meters will also be in full bloom.
In addition, as the garden contains an abandoned mine, people will be able to enjoy the only waterfall in Shanghai. The waterfall is about 60 meters high, officials said.
