Government increases basic living subsidies

THE city government has raised its subsistence allowances for both urban and rural residents.

With effect from today, the monthly allowance for people living in urban areas is 710 yuan (US$114), up 11 percent from 640 yuan, while people living in rural areas get a 24 percent rise — the highest ever — to 620 yuan.

The figures are considered the lowest amounts of money a person needs to subsist in the city.

Anyone whose monthly income falls below the minimum level can apply for the subsidy, and the government will make up the shortfall.
