Haikui to buffet Shanghai with gale winds
Strong gales are expected in the next 24 hours as tropical storm Haikui nears Shanghai, local meteorologists have warned.
Shanghai weather bureau issued a blue typhoon alert at 2pm today, the lowest of a four-color warning system, saying gale-force winds reaching up to 74km/h will pound the city.
Authorities have ordered all outdoor lifts to stop operation and all the ships off the coast to return to harbor.
Haikui was 610 kilometers southeast of Shanghai at 8am this morning and is moving at a speed of 10km/h northwest. It is expected to land in neighboring Zhejiang Province tomorrow night, the bureau said.
Due to the influence of Haikui, Shanghai will experience high winds tomorrow and Wednesday with gusts reaching 102km/h.
