Half-price Tuesdays proving popular
HALF-PRICE offers at some city attractions proved popular with visitors yesterday although numbers still fell short of weekend levels.
But an increase in people visiting is expected when the weather takes a turn for the better.
Some 18 popular attractions are offering half-price entry on Tuesdays until the end of April.
Shanghai Changfeng Ocean World said they had welcomed six times the usual number of visitors yesterday than was usual for a Tuesday.
"It's a slack season for tourism just now," the aquarium's Xu Jie said. "Although the number of visitors was less than at the weekend, it was still satisfactory."
Shanghai Madame Tussauds Wax Museum also said the number of visitors had risen yesterday compared to the previous week. "There was a marked increase in the number of seniors and local people," an official surnamed Hu said.
Some tourists, however, were unaware of the discount offers and some sites, such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, had just part of their packages covered by the offer.
This led to confusion with some visitors buying full-price packages rather than half-price ones.
Local tourism authorities said the half-price offer was following the lead of cinemas, which offered discounts one day a week to draw the crowds.
"We hope more tourists from outside the city, or local people who are free on Tuesdays, will have a good time during the period," said Yang Jing, an official with the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
