City chokes on smog as air heavily polluted this morning
SHANGHAI’S air was heavily polluted this morning with an Air Quality Index reading of 211 at 10am.
Tiny PM2.5 particles were the main pollutants with the intensity reaching 161.1 micrograms per cubic meters at 10am.
Heavy air pollution is more common in the city during autumn and winter, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.
Haze started building up yesterday.
Although the weather doesn’t cause the pollution, a light breeze and higher humidity means air pollution isn’t dispersed, allowing PM2.5 particles to reach unhealthy levels.
Stronger wind is expected this evening or tonight, which will help disperse the pollution.
Residents with heart and lung diseases, as well as children and seniors should avoid physical activity outdoors, especially during rush hours.
