Helicopter rescue drill held in Pudong as part of exhibition

A HELICOPTER search-and-rescue drill was held this afternoon over the Pudong New Area as air rescue was highlighted at the 5th Shanghai International Disaster Reduction and Security Exhibition.

The training exercise, performed by Donghai No. 1 Air Rescue Team, took place at around 2pm at the team's headquarters at the coastal town of Gaodong. Details of the drill were not released.

A rescue member said China has only about a dozen rescue helicopters along its coast. Due to a lack of medical professionals on board, rescuers are called on to do emergency treatment though they do not have advanced skills. The rescue member said most of the people rescued were fishers.

Campus safety is another focus at the exhibition as a series of school-related incidents have rocked the nation in the past few years.

On display were a newly designed school bus and an online platform to facilitate communication among parents, teachers and students.

The three-day exhibition was held at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center.

Tomorrow, experts and authorities will hold meetings about the use of airborne assets in medical rescues.
