Homes and roads flooded, 30-plus flights canceled
More than 50 roads and 600 households were flooded today in the heaviest rainfall in the city in 52 years, the city's flood control authority said today.
More than 30 flights were canceled and nearly 100 were delayed at Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao airports due to the lingering impact of typhoon Fitow and the influence of typhoon Danas.
China Eastern Airlines canceled seven flights to Japan and South Korea.
The rainfall in Songjiang District, the worst affected area, reached more than 200 millimeters, while most areas of the city recorded over 100 millimeters of precipitation.
An orange rainstorm alert was upgraded to a red one at 7:38am today, the second time the highest warning was raised this year.
"The rainstorm was far more serious than that of early September when some Metro stations were flooded," said Zhang Zhengyu, a press officer with the Shanghai flood control headquarters.
