Homes flooded after pipe bursts

HUNDREDS of homes in Zhabei District were flooded after a pipe burst under Zhongxing Road on Monday night.
The leak was stopped early yesterday morning but work is still going on to repair the pipe.
"The pipeline is three meters under the road and will take time to fix," an official surnamed Ye with the Shanghai Waterworks Shibei branch said yesterday.
About 11:35pm on Monday, tons of water flooded into houses on Diligang Road. Many residents were sleeping and didn't have enough time to take action to prevent their homes being flooded.
"I heard a loud sound and I thought it was fireworks," said a resident surnamed Zhao. "But when I looked down, my home was flooded."
Because the residential area is on a low ground and only 3 meters from the burst pipeline, water quickly flooded half the area.
The burst caused a whirlpool of about 5 square meters at the intersection of Zhongxing Road and Jiaotong Road. Residents said that the water was about 40 centimeters at its deepest.
Residents started to build a wall to block the water with anything they could find while they waited for the emergency services.
By 1:15am, they had built a wall 1 meter wide and 4 meters long.
A 200-meter stretch of Zhongxing Road was totally submerged. Some cars tried to drive through but the water caused their engines to stall.
About 1:30am, water staff managed to shut off the supply.
Initial investigations suggested the incident was caused by road subsidence, which put pressure on the pipeline.
