Hongqiao airport ready for tests
ABOUT 4,000 people will be involved in a test of the new facilities at Hongqiao International Airport's second terminal on March 6, 10 days before it opens.
Shanghai Airport Authority, the airport operator, said yesterday that the drill will be an "effective test" of the sign and luggage systems, as well as broadcast and security checks at the new terminal.
The city's old airport is undergoing a 15.3 billion yuan (US$2.24 billion) expansion that includes building a second runway and new cargo zone.
The new terminal covers 364,000 square meters.
The terminal will be subject to a thorough inspection by the civil aviation authorities this month.
On Saturday, about 1,650 people tested the terminal's security and luggage checks, waiting lounges and boarding procedures.
The airport successfully ran a test flight on the second runway in January.
The runway can support the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger plane.
The airport also saw the completion of a smaller terminal and hangar for corporate jets.
More than 2,000 corporate jets arrive at the city's two airports per year and that is expected to increase 10 to 15 percent in the future.
