Hongqiao hub charts big emergency plans
PREPARING for the worst -- be it fire, flood or winds -- local traffic authorities have drawn up innovative emergency plans for the under-construction Hongqiao Integrated Transport Hub.
The Shanghai Science and Technology Commission yesterday approved city airport authorities' concepts for a disaster prevention system in the transport center, due to be the city's largest.
"The new system, first of its type in the country, will safeguard daily operation management," said Tian Jiuqiang, an airport official.
To ensure evacuation in an emergency such as a fire, the plan calls for jet bridges, used for boarding aircraft, to be converted to passenger ways for escaping.
A large open space around the transport hub will be able to hold evacuated passengers.
The key part of the hub is designed to stand up to a flood only seen every 50 years.
And the new airport terminal will have a triangle roof to relieve pressure from strong winds.
