Hot end to unusually cool July

THE traditional “great heat” of summer arrives this week, heralding a hotter spell in an unusually cool month, forecasters said yesterday.

While Chinese solar term Dashu — meaning great heat — falls on Thursday, it will be only around 30 degrees Celsius next week.

But its arrival will be followed by a surge in temperatures next Sunday, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau. Highs of 35 degrees and above are expected for the last week of July.

This week, the city will see cloud and showers through Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will be slightly wetter while temperatures over the week will range from 25 to 31 degrees.

This July has been much cooler than usual, the bureau said.

By July 17, the average temperature at the 24.3 degrees at benchmark Xujiahui weather station — much lower than expected at this time of year.

Officials did not give an average figure.

The bureau attributes the cooler July to various factors, including weather systems affecting the city, bringing fronts of cold air and wind.

Lower temperatures have also been linked to Typhoon Chan-Hom that swept the city on July 11.
