Hot week signals arrival of summer

SUMMER could arrive this weekend with temperatures set to soar from today and stay high for several days, forecasters said yesterday.

From today to Wednesday, maximum temperatures will range from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, after lows of 18 to 19 degrees.

Despite drizzle this morning, it will be sunny and cloudy for most of the week, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The city might have welcomed summer on May 24, but yesterday's temperature plunge, 10 degrees lower than Thursday at 19.3 degrees, put an end to that.

Summer is said to have arrived when the daily average is over 22 degrees for five straight days.

"The daily average temperature was above 22 degrees from Monday to Thursday, but the rain prevented temperatures rising on Friday," said Li Jinyu, a forecaster with the bureau.

Summer usually arrives during the last 10 days of May or the first 10 days of June.
