Icy blast of winter heading for city
FREEZING weather is expected over the next few days as a cold front makes its influence felt, forecasters said yesterday.
Ice and frost are forecast for the suburbs, with the low set to hit 2 degrees Celsius below zero, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
In downtown areas, the low should be around 1 degree, with a high of around 9 degrees.
Winds are also likely to be stronger, added forecasters.
The city is set to get warmer again at the weekend.
Intermittent rain seen over the past few days should continue today, with sunny weather and cloudy spells from tomorrow, said the bureau.
Today, a low of 3 degrees Celsius is predicted, with the high hitting 6.
Tomorrow, the low should drop to 1 degree early in the morning. The high is forecast to climb to 9 degrees, but should stay at around 5 degrees from Wednesday.
"With the expanding of the cold front, the sky should be clearer over the next four to five days," said Zhang Ruiyi, a chief service officer of the bureau.
The national meteorological authority said yesterday that light rain and snow will fall in southern regions over the next 24 hours, while a cold front will move across central and east China.
Northwest China and regions south of the Huaihe River will see rain and snow, while sleet or moderate snow will hit the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the China Meteorological Administration said.
Central parts of southwestern China's Guizhou Province will experience icy rain, the CMA added.
A weak cold front will hit central and eastern regions over the next 24 hours, lowering temperatures by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, gales will sweep the East China Sea, the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, the CMA added.
