Industrial tour sites draw criticism
INDUSTRIAL sites open to tourists have been criticized for strict reservation requirements and insufficient opening hours.
Shanghai features 22 newly opened industrial sites for tourists. Bright Dairy's No. 8 Factory and Baosteel Co remain closed for tours on weekends and holidays. Meiji Seika Shanghai Co Ltd opens for tours from August to December and requires groups of at least 20 people.
A few spots like Shanghai Film Park, Promod Ginkgo Technology Zone and Shanghai Shenxian Wine Factory, which are open year round, require at least 15 in a group. Most sites have similar requirements for group sizes.
Some like Shanghai Yakult Co Ltd and Shanghai Totole Food Co Ltd require reservations at least one week in advance.
Shanghai Film Park said it could not open to tourists when films are being shot.
Shanghai resident Wang Wei said he felt disappointed after checking the list when he planned a tour during the May Day holiday, according to a Wenhui Daily report.
Many industrial sites are closed on weekends and holidays, and most ask tourists to form a group and make reservations at least one week earlier.
"I can not understand why they don't open on weekends," Wang was quoted as saying. "Maybe they don't want to attract more tourists."
Shanghai resident Liu Wei told the newspaper he would like to visit some of the sites, but added that "the requirements are too complicated."
"I have to work on weekdays, and I can't gather so many friends," the bank employee said.
One exception is Hujiao Apiculture Co in the Pudong New Area. The beekeeping company does accept individual tourists. The company's guided tour lasts about 30 minutes and teaches tourists knowledge about raising bees and honey products.
Some sites said people should understand they are running a business and that it's impossible to open all the time.
