Isle resort building starts
LOCAL residents will have a new way to spend their holiday as construction started yesterday on a new tourism project on a Zhejiang Province island that lies off the coast near Shanghai.
Xugong Island, a two-hour drive from the central city, will be turned into a resort with a yacht harbor, sea fishing, golf course, museum and luxury hotel, said the Shengsi County government, the island's administrative body.
A Singapore-based development company plans to invest 4 billion yuan (US$630 million) in the project.
People will have a choice of two routes - by vehicle or by boat - to reach the island about 11 kilometers from the city's Yangshan Deep-Water Port. Ferries will run between the port and the island.
An information official with Shengsi government, surnamed Li, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that Shengsi, which lies close to Shanghai, has closer economic relations with the city than it does with Zhejiang Province.
Li noted that the Disneyland project is being built in Shanghai, and "we hope we could take the advantage to attract more tourists."
Xugong Island, which is now empty, measures about 1.25 square kilometers - about the size of the Puxi section of the World Expo site. The island lies in the country's largest fishery - Zhoushan Fishing Ground - and thus could provide tourists the experience of sea fishing.
Shanghai residents will be able to visit the island as soon as 2013, according to Li.
