It may be blue or grey, but it sure won’t be all white this Christmas

IF you’re dreaming of a grey Christmas, you’re in luck.

While the city’s air quality should improve slightly today, the situation will be considerably worse by the time you’ve finished opening your presents tomorrow, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Center said yesterday after issuing its lowest pollution warning.

A blue-level alert is announced when the air quality index (AQI) is forecast to be between 201 and 300 for the following 24 hours.

Yesterday’s warning was announced at 6am, after the AQI had soared to a high of 306 two hours earlier.

While the index is set to drop to between 60 and 100 today, another round of heavy pollution is expected to arrive in time for Christmas Day.

Schools and kindergartens were ordered to cancel outdoor activities yesterday, while work was halted at construction sites and some factories were told to reduce their output.

District greenery authorities were likewise ordered to help keep dust levels down by cleaning the city’s streets, while all road maintenance projects were suspended.

Yesterday’s dense smog reduced visibility in many areas to less than 1 kilometer, while in the Pudong New Area, Yangpu, Putuo, Qingpu and Xuhui districts PM2.5 levels rose to between 240 and 280 micrograms per cubic meter.

The World Health Organization’s recommended safe level is just 25 micrograms per cubic meter.

Due to a lack of wind and rain, the smog set to arrive tomorrow will remain at least until Sunday, the weather bureau said.
