Kids like 'day-care' wait room in Metro
METRO operators have set up a "day-care center" in a station near a pediatric hospital, where lots of children queue and wait for appointments every day.
Parents welcomed the center in Metro Line 6's Shanghai Children's Medical Center station, which was opened to the public over the weekend to provide a place for children and parents to rest, relax and entertain while they wait several hours to see doctors at one of Shanghai's busiest children's hospitals.
Compared with the long wait in the crowded hospital, many parents prefer to wait for their turns in the nearby Metro station with their children. The station has seen more and more children and patients sitting on the chairs or even lying on the ground for hours.
Before, they could not have a good rest and some young mothers found great difficulty to breastfeed their babies or change diapers, said Xu Ziqian, a Metro worker. So the Metro staff came up with the idea of a free playground for the children.
The center floor is covered by mats and the wall is pasted with cartoon pictures. The center is equipped with desks, chairs, books and toys. The TV continuously plays a video program instructing parents how to take care of their children.
Moreover, the center has set up a private room where mothers can feed their babies or change diapers.
Many children were attracted to the center and they asked their parents to take them to play there.
The center runs from 8:30am to 5pm every day and three Metro staffers take turns to look after children there.
But some parents are worried about possible infections and potential safety hazards in the center full of patients.
"I will not take my children to the center," said Yang Minghua, father of a four-year-old boy. "The ventilation is bad in the station."
