Lanes close on bridge as characters come loose
TWO lanes of Nanpu Bridge were closed for more than six hours yesterday while engineers repaired its damaged nameplate, the Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said.
During a routine check, inspectors spotted that a piece of metal in the final Chinese character of the name had come loose and needed attention, the bureau said, adding that the problem was likely caused by Typhoon Chan-Hom.
The bridge was closed shortly before 10am and reopened about 4:30pm, it said.
Although the repair work wasn’t completed yesterday, the bureau said it no longer posed a risk to traffic so it was safe to reopen the two lanes.
Nanpu Bridge, which opened in 1991, was the first bridge over the Huangpu River.
The design of its nameplate was based on characters drawn by Deng Xiaoping.
